In response to the COVID-19 events, there has been a highlighted need for work environments to have appropriate ventilation in order for workers to be able to safely return to the workplace once lockdowns are over.
SARS-CoV-2 spreads through the air. The risk of COVID-19 infection is considerably higher in an indoor environment, and it’s even higher when indoor spaces are not ventilated correctly.
Respiratory air from breathing and speaking accumulate in indoor spaces, much like cigarette smoke but invisible. Spending as little as 10 minutes in a poorly ventilated room is less of a risk than spending hours in there – so homes and workplaces are high risk.
Correct ventilation is the best way to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and spread, in conjunction with other saftey measures such as density limits, the use of face masks and the use of air purifying devices.
COVID-19 transmission is at a higher risk when:
- Venue: Multiple people indoors, where social distancing is often harder.
- Poor Ventilation: Staying in one place with limited fresh air.
- Vocalisation: Talking, shouting or singing will increase aerosolisation of the virus.
- Time: The amount of time spent in the venue in relation to the risk. Less time is better.
In order to mitigate these risks the following solutions are advised:
Use a CO2 metering device to check and to monitor ventilation in the space. This tells you how much of other people’s exhaled breath you are inhaling. If it is a public space, consider making the reading visible to the public. Don’t guess, test. CO2 meters are cheap and easily accessible.
Improve ventilation to the target level of less than 800 ppm.
Improve conditions using air purifying devices. At a minimum, these should have a HEPA filter and the size of the unit should be matched to the space. Alternatively, relocate activities outside or to a better-ventilated venue.
By ensuring we breathe fresh air, we can avoid most COVID transmission. Where we can’t freshen up rooms, we need good masks, filters to clean the air, and less people.

The Importance of a Carbon Dioxide Meter for Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality is essential to maintaining a healthy and comfortable environment in your home or office. One of the key factors to consider is the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air. A carbon dioxide meter is a valuable tool that helps monitor and manage CO2 levels, ensuring that your indoor spaces are safe and well-ventilated. Whether for home, work, or educational settings, a CO2 measuring device can significantly enhance air quality management. In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of using a carbon dioxide meter and why it’s a smart investment for your indoor air quality.
Why You Need a CO2 Measuring Device
Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring gas in the atmosphere, but elevated levels indoors can lead to health issues such as headaches, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. A CO2 measuring device is designed to detect high concentrations of carbon dioxide and alert you when action is needed, such as increasing ventilation. In addition to improving comfort, maintaining proper CO2 levels can help prevent long-term health effects, making an air quality monitor essential for any indoor space.
The Benefits of Using an Air Quality Monitor
There are several advantages to using an air quality monitor that measures carbon dioxide levels:
- Real-Time Monitoring: A CO2 measuring device provides real-time data on the levels of carbon dioxide in your indoor environment, allowing you to take immediate action if necessary.
- Improved Health: Elevated CO2 levels can lead to poor indoor air quality, affecting your overall health. Using a carbon dioxide meter ensures that the air in your home or office remains safe and healthy.
- Energy Efficiency: Monitoring CO2 levels with an air quality monitor can help optimize ventilation systems, ensuring that air circulation is sufficient without overworking your HVAC system, leading to energy savings.
- Better Productivity: High CO2 levels can negatively impact cognitive function and concentration. By using a CO2 measuring device, you can maintain an environment conducive to productivity, especially in workspaces or schools.
How a Carbon Dioxide Meter Works
A carbon dioxide meter is a device equipped with sensors to detect the concentration of CO2 in the air. Once CO2 levels rise above a certain threshold, the CO2 measuring device will alert you, prompting you to increase ventilation or take other corrective measures. Many air quality monitors also track additional environmental factors like humidity and temperature, providing comprehensive data about your indoor conditions.
Choosing the Right CO2 Measuring Device
When selecting a CO2 measuring device, there are several factors to consider to ensure you’re choosing the best model for your needs:
- Accuracy: Look for a carbon dioxide meter that provides accurate readings, especially if you are using it in a space with high occupancy or limited ventilation. More accurate devices help ensure you are taking the right actions when necessary.
- Ease of Use: A user-friendly air quality monitor with a clear display is important for easy interpretation of the data. Choose a model that offers a straightforward interface with visible CO2 readings.
- Additional Features: Some CO2 measuring devices come with additional features such as logging data over time, tracking temperature, and providing connectivity options (such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) to monitor air quality remotely.
- Portability: If you need to monitor multiple spaces or are frequently moving between rooms, a portable carbon dioxide meter is a great option, allowing you to track air quality in different environments with ease.
How to Use an Air Quality Monitor Effectively
Using an air quality monitor efficiently can make a big difference in maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Here’s how to get the best results from your CO2 measuring device:
- Place the Monitor Correctly: For the most accurate readings, place your carbon dioxide meter in areas where people spend the most time, such as living rooms, bedrooms, or office spaces. Avoid placing it too close to doors, windows, or vents, as these areas may distort the readings.
- Calibrate Regularly: To maintain accuracy, calibrate your CO2 measuring device periodically according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Monitor Changes: Keep an eye on CO2 levels throughout the day, especially in rooms with high occupancy or limited ventilation. If CO2 levels rise, take steps to improve air circulation, such as opening windows or using fans.
The Role of an Air Quality Monitor in Workplaces and Schools
Maintaining optimal air quality in workplaces, classrooms, and other shared spaces is essential for productivity, health, and comfort. A carbon dioxide meter helps facility managers and educators keep CO2 levels within a safe range, especially in areas with high occupancy. By using an air quality monitor, you can ensure that proper ventilation is maintained, reducing the risk of fatigue and enhancing cognitive function for employees and students alike.
Conclusion: Ensure Healthy Air with a Carbon Dioxide Meter
A carbon dioxide meter is a vital tool for maintaining healthy and safe indoor air quality. Whether you’re monitoring your home, office, or school, a CO2 measuring device helps you detect elevated CO2 levels and take action to improve ventilation. With features like real-time data, ease of use, and energy efficiency, an air quality monitor ensures that your indoor environment remains safe, healthy, and conducive to productivity.

Karl –
After using several different brands of CO2 Meters over the last few years, to somewhat unsatisfactory results, I was relieved to find this CO2 sensor.
Paul –
A CO2 monitor tells you how much of the air you breathe is coming from other people’s exhalations. If the CO2 level is too high, you need to leave the space, increase the ventilation, or use an air purifier to filter the air. It is the single most useful item to protect yourself from getting covid19 indoors.
David –
I bought two and they differ by 6-8% whether they’re indoors or out. They’re useful though. I’m more careful about keeping windows open when possible, and I’ve noticed I feel better when it stays below 600.
Wouter –
Bought it for my wife, who works in the schools and where air circulation is poor.
Kayla –
My recent 2021 home energy audit revealed I had high CO2 (1,437 ppm) and I went in search of a best in class CO2 home monitor. I read an online article about CO2 and about the best C02 monitors. I received the monitor and set it and the monitor confirmed my home energy audit report (High CO2). How did I bring down my CO2 levels? I now sleep with the bedroom doors open, some windows open, and all ceiling fans on. When I sleep at night the median level of my CO2 levels is now 750 ppm. During the daytime my windows and doors are open and my levels are between 471 ppm – 510 ppm. I’m sleeping better at night with clear thinking during the day. I’m impressed with the CO2 monitoring device.
Matthew –
Great device to monitor indoor air quality.
Martin Price –
This thing isn’t cheap, but for me it’s been worth it. The thermometer is pretty accurate, as is the CO2 sensor.
Ken M. –
Great little device with an easy to read Co2 readout on the device itself. Many others require you to view data on your phone. Updates on a regular basis 2, 4, 10 minutes, you select the regular intervals when it reads, no having to turn on. It’s always on! I gave one to a friend who is a school administrator and will use to monitor her work area when she returns to school. This really makes you aware of the quality of your surrounding air quality and allows you to take action and see the results.
Adam –
Bought this thing because of the pandemic and the usage of CO2 levels as a good, overall indicator of the safety of indoor spaces. It is terrifying to see how much CO2 can accumulate in a very short time and how some air conditioning units are not set up to renew the air, but just to recycle it, gradually increasing the CO2 levels inside a place. Buy this if you want to be safe, but you will forever be scarred by how easy it is to raise the CO2 levels of a place.
Alex –
Purchased for my mother in when she had to go back to work in person. Gives her peace of mind and helps her monitor how ventilated the classroom is.
James –
It’s exactly what I needed for taking CO2 measurements in the field and in different places in my home while experimenting with different ERVs and home fans. I have two cheaper units that I leave plugged in around my house, but they are bulkier, require wall warts and have more features than I need. I’d buy this one again if I had to choose one of the three I have now
Peter –
I have only used the product for a day, but it seems to be very well made. The screen is very easy to read.
